My thoughts this morning, August 1, 2016:
America is not a color. America is not a race. America is not a culture of any specific kind. America is an idea. America is the idea of justice, freedom, equality, even of love.
I am not an American because I am a white woman born in Georgia. I am an American because I believe in justice for all equally, because I believe in the pursuit of happiness for all equally, because I believe that we are better together than as individuals, the premise on which civilization and self-government, itself, is based.
Donald Trump, from that understanding, is not an American. Barack Obama is an American, wherever he was born. Hillary Clinton, with her penchant for public service and giving back to others, and with her understanding of what an American is as I stated above, should be elected as the next American President. America is an idea that will reach out and cover this globe. Thanks be to God for giving us the ability to love and the ability to contain ideas.
