Thomas Jefferson of today would be still be a Democrat.

I wrote the following on Jay Bookman’s blog, June 26, 2017: (link:

“I will remind readers that thinking Jefferson would be in alignment in thought with a more intelligent Conservative mind of today is wrong-headed thought. One of most of the enlightening revelations about how Thomas Jefferson thought was when he wrote, “EACH GENERATION SHOULD DECIDE FOR ITSELF WHICH FORM OF GOVERNMENT IS MOST PROMOTIVE TO ITS OWN HAPPINESS.”

Thomas Jefferson lived 250 years ago, and we have since had FDR on our national stage. Today’s societies, both here and abroad, call for a degree of Socialism, mixed with Capitalism in order to promote the happiness of ALL of a nation’s citizens.

One thing that is happening today that Jefferson would hate would be the ruling of the masses by the deviousness of the Republican Party in order for the top 1% to control most of the wealth in this nation, at the expense of the underclasses, through their manipulation of the minds of the underclasses.

We are living in a different world now than did Jefferson in the 18th century. We must form alliances throughout the world that are mutually advantageous for all people on Earth to survive, together. Jefferson never had to contend with that fact. Today we do in climate change, world population increases, energy limitations, etc. Jefferson would be the first to charge ahead with new forms of government than he proposed almost 300 years ago. He would want the greatest number of people on Earth to have personal liberty, especially liberty of thought and religion, equality, and a form of government most promotive to ensure the happiness of its citizens.

Quotes from Jefferson’s letters to his friends:

Thomas Jefferson:

“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government.”

“I have never been able to conceive how any rational being could propose happiness to himself from the exercise of power over others.”

“I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power the greater it will be.”

“No government can continue good, but under the control of the people.”

And, the people unaware AND uneducated cannot govern themselves because they will be unaware of machinations by the powerful wealthy to use the uneducated for their own benefit and wealth.

That is my paraphrasing of more Jefferson written into his. ” Notes on the state of Virginia.” And, hence, Jefferson’s creation of the university of Virginia only a few years before he died exactly 50 years after the signing of the declaration of independence.

Jefferson thought in terms of decades, and even centuries.

Worldwide climate change, population increases by leaps and bounds throughout the planet, and energy needs for our mutual survival are going to make that worldwide communication have to occur in the future.

If Thomas Jefferson were alive today, he would have the opportunity to read Ayn Rand.
